Fair question — especially from anyone who's been burned by 'cooling' pillows that were warm by midnight. 'Cooling pyjamas' sounds like marketing, and sometimes it is. So here's the sceptic's guide to what fabric genuinely can and can't do for a hot sleeper.
What no pyjama can do
Refrigerate you. Fabric has no cooling mechanism of its own — anything implying your pyjamas will actively lower your temperature like air conditioning is overpromising. If a brand tells you their sleepwear will stop hot flushes, close the tab; flushes are hormonal, and we've been blunt about that from the start.
What the right fabric genuinely does
Your body cools itself two ways at night: radiating heat off the skin, and sweating so the moisture evaporates. Fabric determines whether both mechanisms work or get sabotaged.
Breathability — an open, breathable fibre lets body heat escape; polyester traps it against you, which is why the 'silky' budget set sleeps like cling wrap.
Moisture management — evaporation only cools you if sweat can move off your skin. A wicking, fast-drying fibre spreads moisture and releases it; cotton absorbs it and holds a damp layer against you for hours.
Cool touch — smooth, dense fibres like modal conduct heat away from skin slightly faster on contact, which is why they feel cool when you first get in. Real, but temporary — minutes, not hours. The overnight benefit comes from the first two.
So the honest claim is…
Good sleepwear doesn't cool you; it stops interfering with the cooling your body already does, and it dramatically shortens the damp-then-cold aftermath of a sweat. That's not a small thing — for a hot sleeper the difference between heat-trapping polyester and breathable TENCEL™ Modal is often the difference between a 10-minute wake-up and an hour — but it's a different thing from refrigeration, and you deserve the distinction.
How to test it without faith
Ignore adjectives, read the fibre label (the logic is in our fabric comparison), and then run the only experiment that counts: your own worst nights. It's exactly why our Short Sleeve and Long Sleeve PJ Sets carry a 30-Night Sleep Trial — scepticism is reasonable, so we priced it into the offer.
