Night sweats have a branding problem: everyone assumes they're a menopause thing. So when a bloke wakes up at 2am with a soaked shirt and damp sheets, he usually does what blokes do — ignores it, blames the doona, and tells no one. But night sweats in men are common, and worth understanding.
First, the definition that matters
Sweating because your room is warm or your bedding is heavy isn't 'night sweats' — that's physics, and it's fixable with a cooler room and better layers. True night sweats are drenching episodes that happen even in a cool room. The distinction matters because it decides whether the fix is your bedroom or your GP.
The common culprits
Hormones. Testosterone declines gradually with age, and low levels can confuse the hypothalamus — the body's thermostat — producing flushes and sweats surprisingly similar to menopause. It's common in men over 45 and diagnosable with a simple blood test.
Stress and anxiety. Your body doesn't distinguish between a work deadline and a survival threat; both switch on the sweat response, and it doesn't clock off at bedtime.
Sleep apnea. Night sweats plus snoring, gasping, or wrecked daytime energy is a pattern worth taking seriously — many men have apnea for years without knowing.
The lifestyle trio. Alcohol, spicy food, and hard training late in the evening all elevate body heat right when it's meant to be falling. Vigorous exercise can raise your metabolic rate for hours afterwards.
Medications and illness. Some antidepressants and other common medications list night sweats as a side effect, and any infection with fever will do it too.
What you can fix tonight
Cool room, lighter layered bedding, easing off the evening beers, and — the layer most men never think about — what you're actually wearing. A sweat-soaked cotton tee holds moisture against you and turns cold; breathable, fast-drying fabric like TENCEL™ Modal shortens the damp-and-chilled aftermath dramatically. The mechanics are the same ones we cover in our night sweats guide, and our Short Sleeve and Long Sleeve PJ Sets are as effective for a sweaty bloke as they are for anyone else — fabric doesn't care about your gender.
When to stop self-managing
See your GP if night sweats are regular and drenching, or come with weight loss, fever, fatigue, or swollen glands. It's usually something manageable — but 'usually' is a word doctors get to use, not Google.
