Postpartum Night Sweats: The Newborn-Era Surprise Nobody Mentions

Nobody puts it in the baby books with sufficient emphasis: somewhere in the first weeks after birth, many women wake at 3am absolutely drenched — sheets damp, pyjamas soaked — while the baby, for once, is actually asleep. Postpartum night sweats are extremely common, rarely discussed, and mercifully temporary. Here's what's happening.

Why your body turned into a sprinkler

Two things collide after birth. First, the oestrogen and progesterone that ran the pregnancy drop off a cliff, and — exactly as in menopause — falling oestrogen makes the brain's thermostat twitchy. Second, your body is offloading fluid: pregnancy increases blood volume dramatically, and sweating (along with more trips to the loo) is one of the main ways all that extra fluid leaves. Add night feeds, hormone surges from breastfeeding, and a body that's generally running hot, and drenched 3am sheets make complete sense.

How long it lasts

For most women, the worst of it settles within a few weeks as hormones and fluid levels find their new normal, though breastfeeding can extend the sweaty era for some. If sweats persist for months, come with fever, or just feel wrong — mention it at a postnatal check. (Also worth knowing: thyroid changes after birth are common and can cause sweating too, and they're easily tested.)

Surviving the sweaty weeks

Layer the bed for rapid changes. A towel or absorbent layer over the sheet means a 3am change takes seconds, not a full remake while a baby negotiates.

Keep water within reach. You're losing serious fluid, and if you're breastfeeding you need it twice over.

Wear fabric that works the night shift with you. This is the weeks-long stretch where sleepwear genuinely earns its keep: something breathable and fast-drying means one sweat doesn't equal one outfit change, and something soft matters when you're living in it around the clock. It's exactly the job our Short Sleeve and Long Sleeve PJ Sets were designed for — the moisture mechanics are the same ones in our night sweats guide. Keep a spare set by the bed; future-you at 3am says thanks.

Cool room, layered bedding. The hot sleeper's bedding setup applies perfectly here.

The reassuring bit

Unlike almost everything else about the newborn era, this one resolves on its own. You're not broken — you're draining a nine-month project. Be kind to yourself, and buy the spare pyjamas.

General information, not medical advice. Anything that worries you postpartum belongs in front of your GP or midwife — that's what they're for.
