Eczema-Friendly Sleepwear: Pyjamas for Itchy, Sensitive Skin
If you live with eczema or chronically itchy skin, you already know the cruel timing: your skin is calmest all day, then the moment you get into bed, the itching starts. You're not imagining it — and the pyjamas you wear are a bigger part of the picture than most people realise.

Why itchy skin gets worse at night
Three things collide at bedtime. Your core body temperature naturally rises under bedding, and heat is one of the most common itch triggers. Light overnight sweating leaves moisture sitting against the skin, softening it and making it more reactive. And every time you move, fabric drags across skin that's already inflamed — friction that a healthy skin barrier shrugs off, but eczema-prone skin registers as an invitation to scratch.
Scratching brings relief for a few seconds, then damages the skin barrier further, which makes the itch worse. Dermatologists call this the itch–scratch cycle, and nighttime is when it does its worst work — often without you fully waking up.
What to look for in eczema-friendly sleepwear
- Smooth, long fibres. Short, coarse fibres (rough cottons, most wools) have ends that poke and catch on dry skin. Long, smooth filament-style fibres glide instead of scratching.
- Moisture management. Fabric should pull sweat away from the skin and release it, rather than holding a damp layer against your body all night.
- Breathability. Trapped heat is an itch trigger. Synthetics like polyester are the worst offenders here.
- Certified low-irritant. Look for OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, which tests fabric for hundreds of substances known to be harmful or irritating to skin.
- Relaxed fit. Tight elastic and clingy cuts concentrate friction exactly where skin folds are most reactive.
Why we chose TENCEL™ Modal
VELIN's Lumen Pyjama Set is made from TENCEL™ Modal, a botanical fibre spun from beechwood. Under a microscope, the difference from ordinary fabric is obvious: modal fibres are exceptionally smooth and uniform, so the surface that touches your skin has dramatically less of the roughness that triggers itch. The fibre also absorbs moisture more effectively than cotton and releases it quickly, helping skin stay dry and cool through the night.
The short version: less friction, less trapped heat, less moisture sitting on your skin — the three nighttime triggers eczema-prone skin reacts to most.
Every Lumen set is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, so you're not introducing harsh dyes or chemical residues to skin that's already doing it tough.
Fabrics to be cautious with
Polyester and synthetic blends trap heat and hold odour. Conventional wool is a well-known mechanical irritant for eczema-prone skin. Even rough or heavily processed cotton can be a problem — cotton absorbs sweat but holds it against the skin, and lower-grade cotton pills into a scratchy surface after a few washes.

Will these pyjamas cure my eczema?
No — and be wary of any clothing brand that claims otherwise. Sleepwear can't treat eczema, but the right fabric can reduce the nighttime triggers (heat, moisture, friction) that make itching and scratching worse. Always follow the advice of your GP or dermatologist.
Is TENCEL™ Modal better than cotton for eczema?
Modal fibres are smoother than cotton and manage moisture better, which matters for itch-prone skin. Quality cotton is still a reasonable choice — see our fabric comparison guide for the full breakdown.
How should I wash sleepwear for sensitive skin?
Cold or lukewarm gentle cycle, a fragrance-free sensitive-skin detergent, and skip fabric softener — softener residue is a common hidden irritant. Each Lumen set ships with a fabric care pouch to protect it in the wash.
What if it doesn't work for my skin?
That's what the 30-Night Sleep Trial is for. Sleep in it, wash it, live in it — if your skin isn't happier, we'll make it right.
