Silk vs Satin vs Modal Pyjamas: The Silky Showdown

They all look luxurious on the hanger. They do not all behave luxuriously at 2am. Silk, satin and modal get lumped together as 'the silky pyjama options', but they're three very different things — one of them isn't even a fibre — and choosing wrong is how you end up glamorous and sweating.

First, untangle the words

Silk is a fibre — the natural protein thread from silkworms. Satin is a weave — a way of constructing fabric to make one side glossy — and it can be made from anything. Most affordable 'satin' pyjamas are satin-woven polyester. Modal is a plant-based fibre made from beechwood, smooth by nature rather than by weave. So the real comparison is silk vs polyester-satin vs modal.

Silk: beautiful, fussy, genuinely good

Real silk breathes well, feels extraordinary and is naturally smooth on skin. The catches: it's expensive, hates machine washing, degrades with sweat and deodorant, and often needs hand-washing or dry cleaning. If you sweat at night, you're maintaining a delicate luxury product under industrial conditions.

Polyester satin: the glamorous sauna

The affordable satin set is plastic fibre with a shine. It looks the part and sleeps hot — polyester traps heat and doesn't absorb moisture, so sweat sits on your skin under a non-breathing layer. For hot sleepers or anyone with night sweats, it's close to the worst possible choice, which is a shame given how many 'luxe' gift sets are exactly this.

Modal: the one built for actual sleep

TENCEL™ Modal gives you the smooth, fluid, silky drape — but from a fibre that absorbs moisture better than cotton, releases it fast, breathes properly, and goes through the washing machine without drama. It's what you choose when the priority is how the night feels rather than how the photo looks (the full fibre explainer is here). It's also the pick for sensitive skin, where polyester's heat-trapping and silk's washing restrictions both work against you.

The honest verdict

Buy silk if you sleep cool, love ritual, and accept the care regime. Avoid polyester satin if you ever sweat at night — which, per our night sweats guide, is most of us. Buy modal if you want the silky feel with none of the fragility — our Short Sleeve and Long Sleeve PJ Sets exist because that combination barely existed in Australia.
