Ask anyone with eczema when their skin is worst and the answer is almost always the same: at night. You can get through a whole day without thinking about it, then twenty minutes after lights-out the itching starts. What you wear to bed won't cure eczema — nothing you wear will — but it has an outsized influence on how those nights go.
Why nights are hardest on itchy skin
Three things happen at bedtime that don't happen during the day. First, your core temperature rises under bedding, and warmth is one of the most common itch triggers. Second, light sweating leaves moisture sitting on the skin for hours. Third, you move dozens of times a night, dragging fabric across skin that's already reactive. Each of these alone can start the itch–scratch cycle; together they explain why so much scratching happens in your sleep without you knowing.
What to wear

Choose smooth, long-fibre fabrics. The mechanical texture of a fabric matters more than most people realise. Long, smooth fibres like TENCEL™ Modal glide over skin instead of catching on it. Under a microscope, the difference between modal and a coarse cotton is stark — and your skin can feel what a microscope can see.
Prioritise moisture-wicking. Fabric that pulls sweat away and dries quickly keeps skin drier overnight. Damp skin is softer, more permeable and more reactive.
Look for OEKO-TEX® certification. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 tests textiles for hundreds of substances known to irritate skin — a meaningful signal when your skin reacts to things other people's doesn't.
Go relaxed, not tight. Loose cuts reduce friction at elbows, knees and waistbands — exactly where eczema tends to flare.
What to avoid
Polyester and synthetic blends trap heat against the body — the single biggest nighttime itch trigger. Conventional wool is a well-documented mechanical irritant for eczema-prone skin. Rough or worn cotton is sneakier: it starts fine, but cheaper cotton pills into a scratchy surface within a dozen washes, and cotton in general holds sweat against the skin rather than releasing it. If you're weighing cotton against alternatives, our fabric comparison guide covers it honestly.
Beyond the pyjamas
Wash sleepwear in fragrance-free, sensitive-skin detergent and skip fabric softener entirely — softener residue is one of the most common hidden irritants. Keep the bedroom cool, use layers you can shed rather than one heavy doona, and moisturise before bed so skin isn't drying out under warm bedding.
